EVANS FUNERAL SERVICES LTDWhen Trevor and Avice Parker bought the business of J.V. Evans Ltd in 1975 the name Evans remained synonymous with Funerals in the Gisborne East Coast region, as it had since 1947 when Jim and Neta Evans had purchased the business from Tom Haisman.
The company continues to operate from its site at 171-179 Ormond Road and day to day operations are managed by son David Parker, with Trevor and Avice still maintaining an active involvement.
Evans Funeral Services employs three full-time funeral directors and two full-time embalmbers.
A registered Funeral Director since 1983, David Parker is also a qualified embalmer, and a member of the New Zealand Embalmers Association, and Australian and British Institutes of Embalming.
Joining Evans's in 1995, Gavin Nickerson completed his national qualification in funeral directing in 1997.
Currently studying toward the National Diploma in Funeral Directing, Kay Paku joined the team in 2004.
All staff continue to attend relevant training seminars held around the country, often having international presenters.
Evans Funeral Services Ltd is a member of the Selected Independent Funeral Homes group. Membership is by invitation only, and is available exclusively to independently owned funeral homes which practice the highest ethical standards of professional service and community leadership. As one of only five member firms within New Zealand, Evans Funeral Services are proud to be a part of this internationally prestigious group. EVANS CHAPELThis Chapel has been extended twice since 1975, the last time being in 1997. This modern attractive facility can seat up to 240 people with additional standing capacity inside and out. A comprehensive sound system enables attendees at large funerals to hear the service if seating is not available.
The Chapel can also be partitioned to allow for private/family ceremonies when numbers attending are small. An electronic keyboard, CD and/or Tape playing facility backs up the sound system to create an appropriate atmosphere for the funeral service.
The Chapel also features a remotely-operated screen and projector which are fully integrated with the sound system. We can design a background or feature presentation on DVD from photographs and videos set to music, to create a memorable tribute.

RETURNED SERVICES FUNERALS:We have available knowledge on Returned Servicepersons funerals, we liaise closely with the local branch of the Returned Services Association, and will provide you with all details available on special funeral grants if you are entitled to them. We can arrange for a flag to drape the casket, we will also arrange for a RSA representative to be present at the funeral if this is your wish. FLOWERS:Flowers can be important, as they provide a focus during the funeral service. We can arrange to get most types of flowers if they are in season. People sometimes place items which were important to the deceased in the casket spray, some examples of these are Footballs, Golf Clubs, Vegetables. Casket flowers most commonly come in two styles, a formal casket spray, or a natural bunch. Special requests for crosses or other shapes are possible if you wish. In one case a florist even did a floral fish design.
We can arrange any floral tribute on behalf of the family. RECORDING OF FUNERAL SERVICES:Often members of the family are in other parts of the world and are unable to attend the funeral service. An audio or video record of the service may be helpful in these circumstances. This can be arranged at the time with your Funeral Director. You will be provided with a Registrars Death Certificate. PREPAID / PREARRANGED FUNERALS:Evans Funeral Services is a member of the Funeral Directors Association of New Zealand and therefore participates in their own prepaid funeral plan.
When prepaying a funeral you must ensure that your money is secure. We do not hold your money with our company, it is placed within the "Family Bereavement Plan" which is administered by the Funeral Directors Association of New Zealand and Sovereign Assurance.
There are two ways you can pre-pay a funeral, you can place in a lump sum up to $10,000 (the maximum allowed under current WINZ Policy for Asset Testing purposes) or you can visit with us and we will listen to what type of funeral you want, price it at today's prices, and that can be the sum you place into it.
The Family Bereavement Plan is inflation proofed, your funeral as described will cost you no extra, whether you die in 5, 10, or 50 years.
All money placed into the Prepaid Funeral Fund earns interest, New Zealand Tax obligations are met by the fund manager, and upon death the money invested plus all interest due is sent through for your funeral expenses. In some cases there is a refund which passes through to your estate.
