The costs involved in funerals
Financial consideration
The funeral director will give you an estimate based on the type of funeral you select. All funerals will differ in cost depending on what exactly you choose, no two funerals will cost the same amount.
The Funeral Director fees are made up of the overheads to run their business and will vary from town to town as the overheads of each business will be different. No two funeral homes will have the same fees and their overheads will differ.
Financial assistance
There are several government agencies that may be able to assist with a payment towards the final cost of a funerals. The three most commonly available are Work and Income New Zealand (WINZ), the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC), and Veteran’s Affairs Financial Assistant Grant.
Some other organisations will have funeral grants for their members, an example of these are Manchester Unity Friendly Society, Southern Cross Medical Insurance, Child Cancer Foundation.
These grants are paid after the funeral has been held, so you may have to pay the funeral account and claim the grant after the funeral account has been paid.
